Kaii Higashiyama is one of the leading Japanese painters of the Showa period and is known as a national artist in the field of landscape painting. His works are highly acclaimed for expressing the beauty and spirituality of nature, and in fact, they seem to speak to the viewer's heart.
"A Single Path" is one of his best-known works, was inspired by a sketch he made at a ranch on the Tanesashi Coast of Aomori Prefecture.
For him, this road is not just a road, but symbolizes the journey of life. It has been described as neither a road illuminated by bright sunlight nor a road shrouded in dark shadows, but rather a mental image of simply wanting to go forward step by step without a care in the world.
