Why do managers set high goals?

I am Yoshida, president of Yamada Shusei, a professional apparel garment repair company in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture.

It has already been a month since the start of 2023.

Why should managers set high  goals?"

I used to think like this.

In order to achieve high goals, it is impossible to maintain the status quo, so we must search for a different means method than the status quo. It will be difficult to achieve the goal immediately in terms of numerical values. However, the awareness and improvement actions in the practical process toward achieving the goal will lead to growth.

That is certainly part of it. However, things have changed a bit since I became president. The main reason I now set high goals as a manager is as follows.

I am not alone! I am not alone! I am fighting as a team! I want them to experience the joy and satisfaction of knowing that they are not alone!

This may sound like a pretty word. In reality, however, the real reason is that I personally need, more than anything else, to face tough situations as a team.

As a first-year president, I have gradually come to realize the responsibility and loneliness that you don't understand until you are in that position. At the same time, I am forced to grow myself day by day.

The driving force behind this is an earnest sense that if I cannot share with my employees the "purpose underlying the visible target figures" and the "bright future that lies beyond the achievement of our goals," then all our work will be in vain. This may sound passive, but I am truly desperate.

Therefore, I cannot serve as president unless I have a sense of joy and fulfillment that I am fighting not alone but as a team.

And I have come to truly believe that the company's overall joy and fulfillment comes from growing as a company, improving treatment, increasing the number of employees, and increasing the degree of contribution to society.

I have been feeling this especially recently.
